The client requested music and audio that would support a quirky, slightly mysterious tone for Punk’s quest to complete his figurine collection. The music needed to be playful but not overly dark or “Tim Burton” in style, serving as a key storytelling element that guides the audience through his obsessive search. The music also needed to avoid completely traditional orchestration such as string or horn sections.
We began with Kaitlyn heading up a music search from our catalogue. She took the brief and put together a 14-track playlist with the help of one or two teammates. The tracks included some mysterious, some quirky, and some real wildcard pieces that we felt would steer the spot in a few different directions based on where the director wanted the story to go, and the fact that we had stems to play with meant that we could offer so much more. The final chosen track was one of the wildcards (Killer Clowns by our own Jordan Sterling) that had us quite excited in the music search – it had a few elements that were outside of the brief, but it had the right energy and playful mysteriousness that suited the story perfectly. We were able to move and remove elements with the use of the stems to fit it all together perfectly.
The central theme was to fill a gap where something was missing. The character would see gaps in things around him as the story progressed and he would feel this need to fill them – this all stemmed from missing the last KFC figurine in his collection on his mantle piece. We used the vocals in the music to be as though the gaps were taunting him. Wherever a gap showed up, you would hear the jeering voices in the music almost mocking him, and whenever he filled these gaps, the voices would disappear. There would be a sense of relief and pride for him whenever he managed to fill the openings.
